Make Sandpaper Transfer Art

What You Need:

  • Sketch paper and pencil
  • Medium-grade sandpaper
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Crayons
  • 白色的绘图纸
  • Iron

What You Do:

  1. Invite your child to get out some sketch paper and a pencil and brainstorm interesting design ideas for his sandpaper transfer. Crayons are made from wax, and when heat is applied to wax, it melts!
  2. Once your child is happy with his design sketch, invite him to get out a sheet of medium-grade sandpaper. He can use a ruler to measure a 4" x 6" rectangle and then use scissors to cut it out, honing his measurement and cutting skills!
  3. Now invite your child to draw his design on the sandpaper using the crayons, encouraging him to press hard and cover all the sandpaper with crayon.
  4. It’s time to transfer! Get out an iron and allow it to heat for a couple of minutes.
  5. Invite your child to place the sandpaper on a work surface, or an ironing board crayon side up and position a sheet of white drawing paper over the top.
  6. Now he can gently go over the white paper pressing the iron over the crayon-covered sandpaper, which will melt the crayon and transfer the design! Be careful – the iron is hot!
  7. After a few seconds, invite your child to carefully remove the white drawing paper and see what has happened!
