Analog vs. Digital

What You Need:

  • 4 foam cubes or cube-shaped boxes such as tissue boxes 
  • Brown craft paper 
  • Tape
  • Markers
  • Scissors
  • Paper plate
  • Construction paper

What You Do:

  1. Wrap the four cubes (either foam or boxes).
  2. Number the faces of one cube 1 through 6. Draw a line under the 6. Number the faces of the second cube 7 through 12. Draw a line under the 9. On the third, label the faces with the minutes :05, :10, :15, :20, :25, and :30. On the fourth, label the faces :35, :40, :45, :50, :55, and :00.
  3. Draw a clock face on the paper plate. Draw a pair of clock hands on construction paper. Remember that you need to separate hands and make sure that one is noticeably smaller than the other.
  4. Have your child choose one Hour Die (1-6 or 7-12) and one Minute Die (:05-:30 or :35-:00). Roll the two dice.
  5. Can he position the dice so that they look like a digital clock? If not, give him a hand and then ask him to tell you the time.
  6. Once he has the time, have him position the hands to recreate the same time on the clock face.  

If your child is having an especially difficult time translating from digital to analog, eliminate the Minute Dice and have him roll just the Hour Dice. Once he can translate digital hours to an analog clock, add the Minute Dice.
