Healthy Friendships
Taking time to reflect on the positive qualities in good friendships can support making healthy choices in choosing friends while also ensuring you are being a good friend to others. In this activity, you and your child will discuss healthy friendships and work together to create a unique "Friends at Heart" painting that illustrates the qualities of good friends. Designed for second and third graders, this activity will support children in building healthy relationships and lasting friendships.
What you need:
- "Kids Talk About: Friends" video (kidshealth.org)
- Friends at Heart worksheet
- Washable paint or finger paint
- Construction paper
- Markers
- Glue
What you do:
- Ask your child, "What makes a good friend?"
- Show the video "Kids Talk About: Friends."
- Ask, "What stood out for you in the video?"
- Ask, "In what ways are you a good friend to others?"
- Ask, "What can we do if we have a friend that is unkind or mean?"
- Explain that it is helpful to be clear in what makes a good friend so that you can be sure to surround yourself with people that have those qualities, and also so that you can know how you can be a good friend to others.
- Explain that today your child will be making a craft that highlights words and phrases connected to healthy friendships and being a good friend.
- Review the Friends at Heart worksheet and work with your child to create a "Friends at Heart "painting.
