Create a Tissue Paper Mexican Flag

What You Need:

  • Green, white and red tissue paper
  • Glue
  • Paper bowl
  • Cardboard (In this example, the backing of list pads were used)
  • Thin dowels or sticks

What You Do:

  1. Help your child tear or cut the tissue paper into approximately 3” x 1” strips. Explain that you are using green, red and white because they are the colors of the Mexican flag.
  2. Pour some glue into the paper bowl.
  3. Ask your child to scrunch up a piece of green tissue and dab it lightly into the glue.
  4. Show your child where to attach the tissue paper onto the cardboard.
  5. Repeat Step 3 until your child has covered one third of the cardboard with green tissue.
  6. Next, have your child do the white tissue paper, covering the second third of the cardboard.
  7. Then have your child do the red tissue paper, covering the final third of the cardboard.
  8. Glue a dowel to the left edge of the cardboard and let it dry. ¡Arriba!

Making a Mexican flag is so easy to do that your child will probably want to make more than one. In that case, make a bunch of them and arrange them in jars or vases filled with flowers and you instantly have a festive centerpiece for your dining table. Along with chili pepper napkin rings, they make a whimsical yet worldly statement for your fiesta. 

Tip: If you use magnetic list pads as the backing for these tissue paper flags, then your child can display them on the refrigerator or any magnetic surface for everyone to enjoy.
