100th Day of School Top Hat

What You Need:

  • Combination of pom poms, feathers, and buttons in assorted colors that add up to 100 items altogether
  • Glue
  • Large paper grocery bag
  • Scissors
  • Stapler

What You Do:

  1. Explain to your child that he will make a festive top hat in order to celebrate the 100th Day of School.
  2. Draw a top hat shape -- a long, vertical rectangle with a shorter, horizontal rectangle attached to the bottom -- on a large paper grocery bag (see photo for example of shape). Then cut out 2 of the shapes from the bag.
  3. If the grocery bag had words on it, you can always turn the shapes over so that the blank insides of the brown paper bag face outwards.
  4. Fit the bottom edges of the "top hat" around your child’s head. Once you've found a good fit, staple the ends of the hat so that it will stay together and fit snugly around your child's head. Add more staples going up the sides and over the top end of it if it needs stabilizing!
  5. Have your child round up 100 pom poms, feathers, and buttons for decorating his top hat.
  6. Let your child glue the decorations onto both sides of the top hat. After the glue has dried, your child can wear his 100th Day Hat on the 100th day of school and beyond!
