When writing, authors need to create a strong hook and ending to draw their readers into the text. In this lesson, students will develop strong support for a movie or book that engages the reader.

Introduction

(5 minutes)
A Hook for a BookCatch Your Reader's Attention
  • Share the print or video advertisement you have selected.
  • Ask the students to reflect on what stands out. What was the advertiser trying to accomplish? What was convincing about the advertisement? How did the advertisement hook the viewer?
  • Tell the students that just as companies want to “hook” consumers with advertisements, writers want to engage their readers with a strong hook and ending.
