Egg Cosy

What You Need:

  • Felt scraps
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Embroidery floss
  • Sewing needle
  • Sewing pins

What You Do:

  1. Have your child cut a rectangle out of felt. The rectangle should measure approximately 4 inches by 4 ½ inches.
  2. Help him trim this rectangle into the shape of an owl. He can use pictures as a reference point or make up his own owl shape.
  3. Let him trace the owl onto a second piece of felt.
  4. Have him use scissors to cut the second owl out.
  5. Next, he'll make the owl’s eyes. Have him cut two circles out of white or yellow felt and two very small black circles.
  6. Help him thread the needle.
  7. Show him how to carefully sew the black circles onto the white or yellow circles.
  8. Have him cut a small triangle, the beak, out of orange felt.
  9. The last two pieces that he needs to cut are the wings. Have him trace one side of the owl’s body onto a piece of felt that is a different color. This is the outside of one wing.
  10. Let him cut this wing out.
  11. Have him trace the wing on another piece of felt.
  12. Have your child cut this second wing -- now he has the completed pair!
  13. Help him arrange all the owl pieces where he wants them to go before he starts sewing. The owl's front and back should be layered over one another, the wings should be peaking out on either side, and eyes and beak should be in the approrpiate places. Make sure he takes his time. Sewing usually looks a lot better when it isn't rushed.
  14. Let your child find an egg and put his new cosy to work!
