Novel Study: The Giver: Before and After Colors

After completing The Giver by Lois Lowry, help readers connect with the novel with this colorful artistic extension activity! Part of the novel study unit for The Giver, this two-page worksheet is designed to encourage seventh- and eighth-grade readers to reflect on the importance of color in the story. Readers will draw four scenes from the book—two from before Jonas could see colors, and two from after—and write a brief description of each scene. At the end of the worksheet, students are asked to write a paragraph explaining how Jonas’s life is different after he is able to see colors. Click “See answers” to view a rubric for grading students’ drawings and descriptions.
