What Does It Mean to Live in a Global Community?
Communities all over the world are more interconnected than ever before, relying on each other in multiple ways. In this social emotional learning activity, fourth and fifth graders will watch videos, conduct research, and reflect on the question: "What does it mean to live in a global community?" Then they will create a collage that illustrates the many ways communities are connected and depend on each other. This activity will help children gain an understanding of global citizenship, building both social and self-awareness.
What you need
- "If the World Were a Village of 100 People: A Story About the World's People" video (YouTube)
- "Learning to Live Together in Peace Through Global Citizenship Education" video (YouTube)
- "Teaching Global Citizenship at Home" (kidworldcitizen.org)
- Paper or posterboard
- Magazines or printed images
- Scissors
- Glue
What you do:
- Ask your child, "What do you think it means to live in a global community?"
- Ask, "How do communities rely on each other?"
- Together, watch the videos "If the World Were a Village of 100 People: A Story About the World's People" and "Learning to Live Together in Peace Through Global Citizenship Education."
- Ask, "What stood out for you? What does it mean to be a global citizen?"
- Explain that together you will explore the website kidworldcitizen.org to gain a deeper understanding of how many humans and communities are connected.
- Then, using the internet or a book from your local library, have your child research and record the definitions for “global community” and “interconnections.”
- Have your child design a collage with words and pictures that represent how communities depend on and need each other for support, resources, and resilience.
- Share what you both learned and the collage with family and friends!
