Same Sound Sort

Introduction

  • Prior to starting the lesson, print pictures that begin with the same initial sound, such as /t/, that is the focus of the lesson. Print at least one picture per student. Be sure to also print pictures that do not begin with the same sound. Pictures can also be created using construction paper and a die cut machine.
  • Create a sorting poster using poster board or chart paper.
  • Draw a line down the middle of the chart paper. Under one column write Starts with T ☺ and on the other column write Does not start with T ☹.
  • Add Velcro to the poster board and on the back of the pictures. If Velcro is unavailable, put tape on the back of the pictures so they may be added to the board.
  • Inform students that they will play a game where they have to sort pictures that begin with the same sound.
